First things first

I’ll ask you to provide some details about your text:

• Is it fiction or non-fiction?

• What is the subject?

• Who is your intended audience?

• How many words is it (including figures/tables, notes and references)?

• When do you want it completed by?

• Is it co-authored or has anyone else worked on the text? 

I will also usually ask to see a sample at this stage. Ideally this sample will be around 1000 words from the middle of the text. From this sample, I will be able to decide how many hours it might take me to proofread the whole document.

What will it cost?

Each project will be different and therefore it will be individually priced. I prefer to quote based how many hours it will take. As a guideline, the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) suggest £29.85 as a minimum hourly rate for proofreading. Please see the suggested minimum rates on their website. If you need a very quick turnaround, then the quoted price will reflect this.
